Foundation course

Wetland Health and Vitality

Please note: The 2023 pilot course has now finished. We are currently working on an updated version of the course for 2024.

This course aims to give a broad overview of wetland conservation, ranging from definitions, to management, monitoring, how we value wetlands and how we involve people with wetlands.

Unit 1

Introduction to wetlands

This unit will introduce the different types of wetlands, exploring concepts of hydrology and wetland systems, and describe the importance of biodiversity to habitat viability and ecosystem health and functioning. It will also examine the pressures on wetlands, with a focus on anthropological activities and discuss the current and future impacts of climate change on wetlands, including future proofing of wetland systems.

Unit 2

Socioeconomic and cultural values of wetlands

Here we will describe and critique the diverse values and methods of valuing wetlands, introducing environmental, economic and social values. Topics include natural capital, monetary valuation, and the services provided by wetland ecosystems, as well as new and emerging approaches to environmental evaluation.

Unit 3

Introduction to wetland management and monitoring strategies

Find out about conservation planning for wetlands, from Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), to site based planning tools. A short review of wetland management techniques, followed by a look at different monitoring strategies for wetlands. Finally, we will explore key outputs from wetland management plans and how they encourage conservation action.

Unit 4

Communication, Capacity building, Education, Participation and Awareness

We will cover the concepts and different forms of CEPA (Communication, Capacity Building, Education, Participation and Awareness), and how these can be applied at different levels and with different stakeholders. How best to deliver CEPA activities at site level, and finally what forms of evaluation can be applied to CEPA activities.
